MARKHAM, ON —May 17, 2023 —With Spring well underway, the City of Markham Operations department is hard at work providing road, park and trail maintenance services, to help keep Markham beautiful.
“Maintaining our infrastructures and ensuring residents can safely enjoy public green spaces during the warmer months continues to be of the utmost importance for us here at the City of Markham,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We take pride in our City and are continually recognized as having one of the best road rehabilitation programs in Ontario. I want to thank our dedicated Operations team that work hard to not only keep Markham’s roads among the best maintained in Ontario, but also our parks, trails, ponds and open spaces clean and beautiful.”
Markham’s road rehabilitation program continues to be among the best in Ontario, with a significant portion of the City’s roads in a state of good repair. Every year, road and sidewalk surfaces are proactively inspected, treated and repaired using environmentally friendly methods. In 2022, approximately 2,693 potholes were repaired – well above the provincial standard timeline and a significant decrease from previous years due to the City’s proactive, preventative maintenance program.
This Spring, Markham will continue to work with Visual Defence Inc. (VDI) in using artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect and log potholes – allowing staff to track and repair potholes more efficiently. The City is the leader in piloting this software since 2020. In addition to other smart cities awards, the City’s Operations team and Visual Defence recently took home first place in the Professional Engineers Ontario York Chapter Project of the Year Award (Medium Categories) for Better Road Practices Using AI.
Help keep Markham beautiful by following these guidelines:
- Put household waste and pet waste in the correct container for curbside pick-up at your home.
- Do not litter in City parks and open spaces
- Use Markham’s “What Goes Where” tool on the Access Markham mobile app or on the City website if you need more information.
